Services for Injury Recovery aims to channel the body’s natural healing abilities and the brain’s relearning processes to enable an individual to live as independently as possible despite the limitations imposed by a brain injury. This is accomplished through a combination of physical, occupational, speech and language, psychological, social and vocational interventions, and medical management.
In addition to the specialized rehabilitation therapy programs, many people with TBI need access to comprehensive long-term care and community services to address long-term needs that may arise in the wake of their hospital discharge or as a result of changes over time in their condition and abilities (CDC, 2022). In general, access to these long-term care and community service options varies by state.

Many barriers exist to receiving comprehensive interdisciplinary inpatient rehabilitation for persons with TBI, including the need for insurance preauthorization, a shortage of available beds in rehabilitation facilities, and hesitancy by some acute care facilities to accept TBI patients. The location of comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation facilities, which are often located in urban centers, can be several hours from a person’s home and family.
The availability of telehealth (the use of telecommunications and information systems to provide clinical healthcare remotely) can make a significant contribution to the care of individuals with TBI, especially in rural areas and among people with lower incomes. However, the quality of telehealth services provided in these settings has been inconsistent and is limited by funding and infrastructure.
